MEET ME, DAVID MATATA, UPF KENYA

Hi David! Tell me more about you! My name is David Marendes Matata, I am 52 years-old and come from Busia County in the western part of the Republic of Kenya. I am married and have three children.
I completed my primary education at Nambale D.E.B Primary School in 1988 and went on to graduate from Sigalame High School in 1992. Motivated by an interest in logistics, I earned an Ordinary Diploma in clearing, forwarding, and shipping from the Kenya Institute of Clearing and Forwarding in Mombasa in 1994.
My professional journey began in Mombasa, where I gained valuable expertise in the logistics sector through roles with several respected firms. In 2018, I obtained a Diploma in Customs Administration from the Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA).
When I am not working, I enjoy swimming and reading books.
What is your background for choosing the industry? My career began as a driver, transporting vehicles from the port of entry in Kenya to the Malaba Border in Uganda. This experience sparked my interest in the customs clearance documentation process at border points. Motivated to learn more about logistics, I enrolled in a college specialising in clearing and shipping. This decision ultimately led me to establish my career in the industry.
What is your role at the office? My daily responsibilities in the office involve maintaining close communication with our designated customs agents to obtain regular updates regarding the clearance status of shipments. I keep clients informed about the arrival of their shipments, provide information on loading schedules and truck allocations, and monitor the progress of shipments as they move from the port to their final destinations. Additionally, I notify our office about any delays, such as system outages or traffic issues at the port. I also carry out any other tasks assigned to me by my supervisor (GM).
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Looking ahead five years, I see myself as a team leader in operations, overseeing a broader range of responsibilities, encouraging collaboration and teamwork, and driving the company’s success in delivering goods and services.
